THE HOLLYWOOD REPORTER – The Toronto Film Festival on Tuesday finalized the lineup for its 41st edition, adding onstage conversations with Deepwater Horizon star Mark Wahlberg and Chinese star Zhang Ziyi (Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon) as well as 35 films from first- and second-time directors, more docs and virtual reality fare.

Toronto’s Discovery sidebar will feature world premieres of Wayne Roberts’ Katie Says Goodbye, starring Olivia Cooke (Me and Earl and the Dying Girl) and The Killing star Mireille Enos; Scottish director Hope Dickson Leach’s The Levelling, starring Game of Thrones’ Ellie Kendrick; and Rachel Lambert’s In the Radiant City, produced by Jeff Nichols.

Cooke stars opposite Christopher Abbott in writer-director Wayne Roberts’ feature debut.

Olivia Cooke gained attention for her performance in the Sundance stand-out, 2015’s Me, Earl and the Dying Girl. From there, the Bates Motel actress landed the female lead in Steven Spielberg’s tentpole adaptation of Ready Player One, but first she will be back on the fall festival circuit with the indie Katie Says Goodbye.

The coming-of-age drama centers on a young waitress (Cooke) in the American Southwest who is working towards moving to San Francisco, but her plans and hard work are derailed when she falls in love with an ex-convict, played by Girls actor Christopher Abbott.

Katie Says Goodbye is feature directorial debut for writer-director Wayne Roberts, who first envisioned Katie’s story as a novel but was was encouraged to make the movie by Martha Marcy May Marlene director Sean Durkin, who both attended NYU film school.

With Durkin on board as an exec producer, Roberts went looking for his Katie.

“When I saw Olivia’s headshot I knew that she was Katie,” said Roberts who hadn’t seen any of Cooke’s past work before he cast her in his project. “I don’t watch TV, so I was unaware of her [television] work beforehand and I had never seen Me, Earl and the Dying Girl.”

He continued: “We sat down for a meeting and hit it off and both knew it was meant to be.”

Katie Says Goodbye, which also stars Jim Belushi and Mireille Enos, shot over six weeks during in the winter in New Mexico, in the outskirts of Albuquerque. On what he is most looking forward to about the upcoming film festivals, Roberts said, “I am most excited to just watch the film with an actual audience full of people I don’t know. I am excited for people to finally see Olivia’s performance.”

ABQJOURNAL.COMAnother independent film is coming to New Mexico.
The New Mexico Film Office confirmed that “Katie Says Goodbye” will be filming through the end of April throughout the state.

The film tells the story of 17-year-old waitress who supports her deadbeat mother, while saving to escape her truck stop town.
After she falls in love with an ex-convict, things quickly turn south for her, ultimately testing her spirit and determination for a better life.

The film stars Olivia Cooke, Mireille Enos, Christopher Abbott, Jim Belushi and Mary Steenburgen.

According to the NM Film Office, the production will employ at least 29 New Mexico crew members, 33 New Mexico actors and approximately 50 local background talent.

Cooke last filmed “The Signal” in New Mexico. The film is directed by Wayne Roberts.

It’s produced by Max Born, Kimberly Parker, Eric Schultz, Carlo Sirtori, Benjamin Steiner and Jake Wasserman.
