‘Life Itself’ Actress Olivia Cooke Talks About Her Happy Place, Weirdest Quirk, and Her Kylie Minogue Mantra

You’re strong, you’re a Kylie Minogue song!

For Cosmopolitan’s September issue, we sat down with Life Itself star Olivia Cooke for a “Quickie” interview about her guilty pleasures, anxieties, and mantra—

Common misconception about me: That I’m American (I’m British) and that I’m a fully functioning adult.

My happy place: The park at the bottom of my road in New York City, sitting in the back of a cinema, or at sundown cocktails with my mates.

I get my news from: The New York Times for the stuff I ought to know about and my pal Jordan for the stuff I ought not to know about (i.e., gossip).

Everyone in their 20’s should: Stop worrying about things that haven’t even happened to them yet. And wash your sheets once a week.

I have a major weakness for: McVitie’s Digestive Biscuits and PG Tips English Breakfast Tea.

The last time I was nervous: I went to a barbecue a few days ago. Why did this make me anxious? I have no idea.

My weirdest quirk: Apparently, I chatter my teeth in my sleep.

My mantra: A Kylie Minogue lyric: “I’m spinning around, move out of my way.”

TELEGRAPH.CO.UKOlivia Cooke: From Oldham to Hollywood in six years – ‘The first time I read for Spielberg, I was shaking in my boots’

The first time I had coffee with Olivia Cooke, she was 21 years old, had moved to New York City just five weeks earlier, and, having never lived anywhere but her mum’s house in Oldham, was convinced that she’d be lonely for ever. I told her that it had taken me a year to make proper friends after I relocated from the UK. ‘A whole year? I really can’t do that,’ she’d gasped, looking horrified.

Her star was already firmly in the ascendant, however; her role as the terminally ill Rachel in Me and Earl and the Dying Girl – which had won the Grand Jury Prize at the 2015 Sundance Film Festival – was earning plaudits from both the public and those inside the industry.
